The POP-EXPOSE

THE POP EXPOSE ‘Sir Ian Holm’ by Mitchell Smith!

Sir Ian Holm was born in 1931 in Essex, England and passed away Friday the 19th at age 88. Ian is best known for his role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy playing Bilbo Baggins. Ian also had parts in some other popular films such as Aliens, Chariots of Fire, and The Aviator. He also did some voice acting such as Skinner in Ratatouille, and had some TV spots in shows such as Napoleon and Love where he played Napoleon as well as many live performances on stage.

When Lord of the Rings first came out I did not know anything about the story. One of the first scenes in this film was Bilbo Baggins saying, “no thank you”, to Gandalf knocking on his door. I love Ian in LOTR, as most of the other characters were just starting their adventure, Bilbo was telling the story he had already lived. I thought he did a great job being the old man who had already done everything the young guys were about to venture out and do.

Bilbo also had an attachment to the ring and Ian brought that across in his performance. Holm had a nice career spanning over nearly 50 years. For me Holm will always be my Bilbo and his face is etched in history as he is part of one of the most epic trilogies of all time. He will be missed but his memory will never be forgotten. RIP Ian “Bilbo Baggins” Holm. Be sure and join in the discussion AFTER THE JUMP!
